Short Course Descriptions

  • HMD & NVG Testing

Course Description This course is designed to provide technical and human factors information regarding NVGs, NVIS  (NVG compatible) lighting, and the integration of both in the aircraft.  Emphasis is placed on system evaluation techniques, which are based on years of practical experience in a number of different aircraft.  Topical information in the academic lectures is reinforced during NVG lab and aircraft demonstrations.  It will also provide technical and human factors information regarding Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) systems.  Emphasis is placed on various approaches to system design that impact usability and methods of test that will...

  • Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E) Course

Course Description The course teaches basic flight test principles, concepts, and processes of Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E).  Classroom instruction is reinforced by two demonstrations to provide “hands-on” experience in OT&E flight testing. A final project flight further reinforces the classroom instruction.  The final project uses operational requirements/capability documents to plan, flight test, and report on how well an aircraft or system meets mission needs. This course develops a “customer-centric” view of testing by providing an overview of current OT&E philosophies, processes, concepts and issues.  Specifically the course...

  • UAV Systems Test

Course Description This two week Course addresses the unique testing requirements when evaluating a UAV system. It is assumed that the participants are generally knowledgeable in manned aircraft flight testing as this course builds on that knowledge. The students will be involved with four UAV missions utilizing the NTPS FAA-approved C150 Optionally Piloted Aircraft (OPA). Course lectures will introduce the students to UAV-specific testing when compared to manned Fixed and Rotary Wing testing. Issues such as data latency, human factors, data link coverage, failure modes, contingency management, telemetry issues, guidance, navigation and control,...

  • Pre-TPS Course

Course Description The NTPS Professional Courses demand a strong background in mathematics and the physical sciences as well as extensive flying experience.  Many pilots and engineers selected to attend flight test schools have not had the opportunity for many years to exercise the academic skills learned in school or may not be coming from a flying assignment. The objectives of the course are to refresh the students academically in the basic concepts of mathematics, physics, and aerodynamics, and provide some opportunities to refresh flying skills. The six-week course is basically divided into three sections: Refresher in mathematics...

Professional Course Modules
Professional Course Modules are typically divided into one week of theory and two weeks of practical. The theroetical phase of any of the 17 modules that make up the Professional Course can be taken stand alone as an academic-only course.  These are normally five day courses, Monday through Friday. See the following links for details: Core T&E modules, Performance & Flying Qualities modules, Systems modules
